Yorkshire S.A County Championships February/March 2010
Weekend 3 March 20th/21st
The
final weekend of the county championships saw us return to Ponds Forge with 21
swimmers with some swimming at Ponds Forge for the first time. Lauren Gwynne
and Yasmin Callaghan kicked off the events with the 50 freestyle. The
boys 9/11 backstroke was the next event with 9 year olds William East,
Travis Johnson and Ben Cantrill all achieving great times, Scott
Zimmerman, Nahum Klos, Jack Newton, Finley Fox, Nathan East, Sven Schygiol
and Jack Cowling all followed with some new P.B’s. Bryony Bower,
Hannah Mayall, Molly Newton, Holly Williams, Melanie Calder and
Caitlin Bower all competed in the next event the girls 50 back, this saw
some massive improvements and Holly, Mel and Caitlin all achieving
new club records. We were now back with the 9/11 year boys taking part in the
50 fly in which Travis Johnson had a great swim knocking a massive 3
seconds off his previous time Scott Zimmerman and Jack Newton
both achieving new club records and for Scott swimming to his first of three
finals. Caitlin and Holly were definitely on good form taking
part in the 50 fly and both yet again smashing their previous club records
achieved only a month ago. Melanie also had an impressive swim with a
time of 35.91. The last event of the morning saw Kieran Skinner swimming
a great 50 free in a time of 29.58. We then moved onto the finals and Scott
Zimmerman taking part in the 50 fly. After been seeded first after a
fantastic heat it was set to be a nail biting final and as Scott took to
the water we could see it was to be a close race which came right down to the
touch. Scott finished in 2nd position by only 0.07 seconds
and with less than a second between the top five it was a very exciting final.
We recommenced the afternoons events after a short break with the girls 9/10
backstroke, Lauren Gwynne and Amy Baker had great swims with
Amy achieving a 3 second P.B in only six weeks. Scott swam another
great
race in the 50 breast achieving another final placing. Caitlin Bower
swimming her number one breast then became our second finalist of the afternoon
and a new P.B for her. Lauren Gwynne found that the 50 metre pool
definitely suited her after swimming in it for the first time she finalled in
the 50 fly after knocking a massive six seconds off her short course time. It
seemed that the afternoon was bringing us finalists in every event as Kieran
Skinner went through to the fly final and Scott the free final – a great day
for him achieving three out of four finals. We also had a number of P.B’s in
the 50 free with Ben, Travis, Finley, Jack Cowling, Jack Newton
and Sven Schygiol. The 11/13 girls then finished their day with the 50
free and for Becci Foster, Caitlin, Mel and Holly all gaining new
P.B’s.
We moved onto the afternoons finals and Caitlin finishing in 6th
position in the breaststroke final. Kieran then swam the butterfly final
and he also achieved 6th position and a new P.B. Lauren Gwynne
was amazing after entering the final in 10th position afer achieving
a time of 44.34 she then swam the final in a fantastic time of 41.34 and
finished in 6th position. The penultimate final of the day for us
was Scott who put everything into this event after pulling out of the
breaststroke final he was seeded 5th for the free final. Scott
swam a brilliant race knocking nearly two seconds off his heat and finishing
in 3rd place only 0.10 off second so yet another nail biting finish.
Kieran then completed his second final with the backstroke in which he
finished in 9th position and a new P.B
The following morning saw 9/10 year boys Travis, Nathan, Scott and Sam Legge
and taking part in both the free and medley relays and achieving the final in
both races which saw them earning themselves 2nd and 4th
positions respectively in the final. The girls 11/12 teams consisting of
Caitlin, Holly, Lauren Callaghan and Maisie Legge achieving the final in
which they were seeded 10th. After swimming a great race they were
to move up two places in the final finishing in 8th position.
Kieran Skinner and Josh Jones formed part of the team in the boys
medley and free team with Aisley Leeman stepping into the Open Team. A
strong team was entered for the 15/16 girls with Jasmin Kirk, Rhiannon Haber,
Lauren York and Ashleigh Fletcher seeing us through to two more
finals which resulted in bronze medals for the free event. The afternoon
session
saw Yasmin Callaghan and Amy Baker swimming in the medley and free
teams and were just pipped to the final by less than a second in the free
relay. The boys 11/12 team consisting of Jack Newton, Sven Schygiol,
Nathan and Kieran Sharman tried hard but were against the strong A
team – James Burke, Oliver Webster, Tom Wells and Charlie
Spencer who were a force to be reckoned with finishing with both silver and
bronze medals. In the girls medley team we had Molly Newton and
Melanie Calder competing from Scunthorpe and for the Freestyle relay
Becci Foster also joined the teams they were up against some strong
competition with Leeds entering a total of six teams but the girls swam well and
even achieved P.Bs from the day before ! Tom Spencer joined the 15/16
year team and they reached both finals finishing 6th in the medley
and 7th in the free.
That concluded a busy three weekends of the County Championships and we achieved some impressive results with amazing P.B’s and a total of 59 Club records been broken.
Overall CASA brought home 114 individual medals/pennants and were to finish in 5th position as a club.
Well done to all swimmers who took part.
