Rotherham Metro A/B Grade Open Meet

Scunthorpe Anchor took 26 swimmers to Ponds Forge, Sheffield to take part in an open meet hosted by Rotherham Metro on 16th January 2010.  A hugely popular meet which allows swimmers to take part in 50, 100 and 200 metres of all four strokes.  As always our swimmers were on good form and we received a good haul of medals.  Young swimmer Amy Baker took part in four events and had a clean sweep of P.B’s and knocked an incredible 8 seconds off her 200 backstroke time.  Sisters Caitlin and Bryony Bower took home 3 medals between them with Caitlin finishing 3rd in the 200 breaststroke and 2nd in the grueling 200 fly.  Bryony added to the collection with the 100 back after a fantastic swim which also saw her gain a 5 second P.B.  Melanie Calder a new member to the club showed what a great addition she is to the team after earning herself 4 medals, two of them in the 100 and 200 fly events.  Ellie Taylor had some great swims especially in the 100 free in which she knocked over 10 seconds off her previous time.  Megan Fletcher took part in the event for the first time but surely not the last as she came away with four medals with golds in the 50 and 100 metre backcrawl.  Jack Cowling and Nathan East showed off their skills with their number one stroke, back, in which Jack earned an A grade gold medal and Nathan, a speeding ticket, which is a fantastic achievement as it means he swam faster than the designated cut off time for the event.  Nathan also achieved a bronze medal in the 200 backstroke.  Eleven year old swimmers Jack Newton and Finley Fox swam together in the 100 metre fly event in which they each achieved gold medals, Jack an A grade gold with a time of 1.21.38 and Finley 1.30.89.  Jack also went on to achieve 3 further medals in breast, free and another fly event.  Adam Vaughan gained a bronze medal in the 50 free but only missing out on gold by 0.15 seconds which shows how close the 50 metre swims are.  Rhiannon Haber achieved 2 new P.B’s in the 100 fly and 100 breast another of our swimmers  narrowly missing out on a podium position by hundredths of a second.  Ryan Johnson, Charles and Edward Kenny, Nahum Kloss and Sven Schygiol all 11 year old swimmers at the club also had some great swims with twins Charles and Edward competing in a 50 metre pool for the first time.  Lauren and Yasmin Callaghan proved how their hard work in training is paying off with four medals between them, one a gold for Lauren in the 50 metre backcrawl. Michael Trueman also showed some massive improvements with six new P.B’s  knocking nearly 8 seconds off his free events.  Becci Foster and Molly Newton who regularly push each other in training showed their strength in the 200 metre freestyle earning silver and bronze medals and a further bronze for Becci in the 50 back.  A special mention also to Becci who achieved 10 P.B’s from 11 events, some massive improvements since only October.  Hannah Mayall and Francis Moir should also be pleased with their performances with both girls achieving great P.B’s.  Holly Williams  continued her successes with the fly events after firstly achieving a new P.B in the 50 metre event she then went on to the hardest event, 200 fly and achieved a fantastic time and a silver medal.  Scunthorpe swimmers must practice the fly stroke a lot as thirteen year old Kieran Skinner achieved a speeding ticket in the 50 metre followed by gold in both the 100 and 200 metre event.  Kieran added to these medals with 2nd in the 50 breaststroke and bronze in the 50 and 100 freestyle event.

Overall CASA finished in fourth position with two of the CASA swimmers finishing 1st overall. Well done to Tom Wells and Natalie Sharman who were top boy and top girl respectively.
